Breakfast is my favorite meal. Dietitians and other nutrition experts say that breakfast is very important and we should not miss eating a good nutritional foods first thing in the morning. Unfortunately with the hustle and bustle of daily life most of the time breakfast takes a back seat. I would often run out of the house not eating anything until I drove through the ‘drive-thru line’ at the nearest coffee shop. Even then I would order items that were quick, convenient and definitely unhealthy – coffee and a donuts, muffin or anything that happened to appeal to me that day.
Over the years, I would get into the habit of ordering the same things. The ‘drive-thru’ crew knew when they saw my car exactly what I wanted so I only had to say good morning to place my order. I always had the exact change and things went very quickly. Until, one day I decided to change things and I broke out of my comfort zone. I started by skipping the coffee shop altogether. I shopped for more healthy alternatives for breakfast and stocked the shelves and refrigerator with these items. I switched from cream in my coffee to skim or low fat milk. Donuts and muffins are an indulgent treat for special times or the occasional ‘bad day’.
My breakfast became healthier. I admit I really enjoy the typical ‘American’ breakfast food whenever and wherever it is served, but I avoid preparing it for myself. Would or could I go back to my old comfort zone, you bet I could! Just give a couple of donut or muffins and I would be off to the good old days. Fortunately I am not tempted too often and I enjoy my current routine. Maybe switching up my breakfast food selections, keeping them healthy but with more variety will keep me from staying in the zone.
