This is Mother’s Day weekend. It has been 29 years since my mom died and I miss her every single day. Since she’s been gone so long, I often feel that it’s almost like another ‘black Friday’ but for Mother’s Day. I am not belittling Mother’s Day and the sentiment behind it but to me it is just another day that stores and florist want us to spend our money.
Because I do not like to shop for anything I look for any excuse not to go shopping, except for today. It was such a beautiful day here in New England I felt the urge to do a little shopping for someone very special. I had to buy something for my sister, Joan, who helps me with my business and doesn’t receive the pay or gratitude she deserves. She is my own personal shopper, because she loves to shop, but she needed to be remembered today.
So I went Home Depot! I know, you are thinking what kind of gifts are at Home Depot. My type of gifts. Ones you can find quickly and not have to spend too long in the store or in the checkout line. I bought a Mandevilla plant, the best one I could find, and wished her a Happy Mother’s Day. Joan, my best friend and is like a mother at times, is a special person who loves to care for me, her children, and anyone or anything that requires some TLC – even a sickly Mandevilla plant from Home Depot.
There are just days when I need to stretch my comfort zone and do some shopping. Particularly when the gift is for a wonderful Mother, sister and outstanding woman.
