Today is a beautiful spring day. It is a perfect day to put the car top down, except I do not have my convertible any more, for a road trip to nowhere! I am sure we all have day when we may all like to just shut down, get in the car, and take off with no destination in mind. Most of us would be satisfied with a few hours or a day, but others may just want to take off for the pure sense of adventure we may find out there on the road.
I live in New England where I can travel to other states in relatively short periods of time. I can be in parts of Maine, NH, and VT in a little over 2 hours. There are so many places in these and other states – historical, cultural, scenic, and just plain interesting – that I have not seen. How sad is that!
I tend to go back to the same beaches, museums, and events because I liked and enjoyed them and I want to relive that sense of joy and awe. However, I never seem to enjoy these places as much as I did on my first visit! Why do I go back? Obviously I am comfortable.
So it is time to stretch the comfort zone and break out the same old, same old, stuff. This spring, summer, and fall the zone will be broken. Instead of heading for the same old haunts I will point the car in a direction with no destination in mind and see what new and interesting places I will find.
“Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground.” ― Judith Thurman
